The Nicholas Ferentinos Scholarship Fund

This week only!
Make a contribution at the memorial service on Saturday, March 5.

Matching challenge extended to March 5!

As of Wednesday, March 2, the Nicholas Ferentinos Scholarship Fund has collected $38,555!

  • Goal: $50,000 — an increase from the original goal of $25,000. According to the district foundation, a scholarship fund of $25,000 can support a $1,000 scholarship each year to one deserving student.
  • Matching challenge: An anonymous HHS Epitaph alum has generously offered to match all donations before the end of February by March 5, dollar for dollar!
  • If we reach our funding goal of $50,000, the matching donation will get the scholarship fund to $100,000—allowing it to support annual scholarship(s) of $4,000 a year!

Help up reach our goal!

Information from the FUHS Foundation:

Nick Ferentinos was a well-respected, admired and nationally recognized teacher who taught English, journalism and American Studies at Homestead High School from 1965 to 2000. After retiring from the classroom he worked as a teacher mentor until his retirement in 2003. After that Nick continued to mentor new teachers and journalism programs.

This scholarship was created by current HHS staff, former colleagues, friends and past students after Nick was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in the spring of 2015. Nick has made a positive impact on the lives of thousands of students throughout his time in the district, and this scholarship has been implemented in the hope of continuing the legacy that Nick began so many years ago. The scholarship will be granted to a student or students who have demonstrated strong mentoring abilities and have shown exemplary performance in journalism, English or, American Studies or who plan to pursue a career in journalism or teaching (K-12).
